Washington Redskins Rumors: Robert Griffin III Benched for Colt McCoy? Jay Gruden Hints Change as Kirk Cousins Trade to Oakland Raiders, Buccaneers Option in 2015

The Washington Redskins were hoping their quarterback issues were behind them. Robert Griffin III was healthy again and able to be inserted back into the lineup. That should stop all of the chatter regarding who would be the starter week to week, right? Apparently wrong because after the Redskins fell to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9, head coach Jay Gruden is left to consider all options as to who starts under center in Week 10.

According to Gruden, the jury is still out as to who starts at quarterback for the Redskins. Griffin looked healthy in the loss to the Vikings. He moved well on the field, but still showed issues of understanding the offense and also failed to make quick decisions when things were collapsing around him. That has left Gruden to question whether a change is necessary.

"You start out with Robert, you give him all the reps in training camp and then he hurts his ankle and misses five or six weeks," Gruden said, via CSNWashington.com. "We get a look at Kirk [Cousins]. We get a good look at Colt [McCoy] and now it's back to Robert. So, the jury is still out on that position. But we feel good about Robert's progress so far. We've just got to continue to build and see how (RGIII) does from week-to-week-to-week and hopefully we can see that here at the end of the season. That's what we have to see and that's what we have to find out."

When Griffin first got injured and Cousins took over the starting spot, Gruden said he would continue with the quarterback that had the hot hand. That turned out to not be Cousins, but instead McCoy emerged as the winning quarterback. The third-string player was responsible for two of the three wins Washington has on the season. Some would say that constitutes as the hot hand, but having Griffin healthy makes the decision difficult.

Given the fact that Griffin was a costly pick for Washington and drafted specifically to be the face of the franchise, if he is healthy he will start regardless. McCoy could toss four touchdowns in a game and the Redskins will still look to put Griffin under center. The question remains as to just how successful the Redskins can be with that being the continuing trend.
