The Chicago Bulls are on the verge of signing center Nazr Mohammed.
The deal has yet to become official, but there were reports that Mohammed had chosen the Bulls over the Brooklyn Nets, who were also interested in the veteran center.
This is a sign that the Bulls will not be matching the offer sheet the Houston Rockets gave Omer Asik. The offer sheet is reportedly $25.1 million over three years. By picking up the Mohammed and not matching the sheet, the Bulls will save $15 million in cap penalties in the final year of Asik's contract.
Also, the signing of Mohammed means the Bulls have added another piece to their recently depleted bench.
They released C.J. Watson and Ronnie Brewer. John Lucas III is about to sign with the Toronto Raptors. Kyle Korver went to the Atlanta Hawks.
Signing with the Bulls means Mohammed will play in front of his hometown. Mohammed has 14 years in the league. He has played for the Sixers, Haws, Knicks, Spurs, Pistons, Bobcats and most recently, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Las season in 63 games played, he averaged 11 minutes, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 points.
For now, the Bulls will continue to fill out their bench as they need players to step up in the absence of their MVP caliber point guard Derrick Rose.
The good news for Chicago is that Rose is recovering well from an injured ACL that sidelined him during the playoffs.
