The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking at a trade for Corey Brewer with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dion Waiters could be an option to move, as the Houston Rockets are also interested in making a deal with the Wolves and this comes after interest for the Cavs in Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov earlier in the summer.
According to ESPN.com writer Marc Stein, the Cavaliers and the Houston Rockets have been talking with the Wolves about a deal for Brewer and he wrote the talks between the three teams are "active". The Cavaliers are looking to make a move to add some depth to the roster, while the Wolves want to shed salary and they wouldn't mind getting rid of the near five million deal that Brewer has. Brewer has a $4.9 million next season and Jeff Zillgitt writes on Twitter that the teams are looking for Brewer to waive that option if they trade for him. The Cavaliers have been playing much better after a slow start and they feel that adding Brewer gives the team another veteran option off the bench that they can use.
The Timberwolves made a huge trade with the Cavs this summer for Kevin Love and now they could make another move with Brewer. Brewer was mentioned as a possibility in that deal, but obviously he was not included in the package. The Timberwolves are playing things with patience on this move and now that Wiggins and Anthony Bennett are there, there is less use for Brewer in the rotation. According to ESPN.com, the Cavaliers are still the front runners for the deal, as Minnesota sees the potential of as a better trade than what Houston is offering.
The Cavs are considered favorites for the NBA title after the Love trade and he gives LeBron James a legitimate star player alongside him and also one that is a veteran. Many applauded LeBron returning to Cleveland, but many analysts also cited the fact that the Cavs were a young and inexperienced team and while they could win the east, a championship would be tough. Love gives LeBron a veteran to play with Kyrie Irving and while neither of those players have been in the playoffs before, playing with James should only help that along.
The Cavaliers also were smart in few agency, as they signed Mike Miller and James Jones while also locking up Kyrie Irving long term and now they have LeBron bank as well to headline all of it. Adding Brewer would give the team some solid depth and he is another veteran player to add to the mix along with Shawn Marion.
At the time of the original Love deal and the Thaddeus Young trade, Brewer was mentioned in some reports as an option for the Sixers. Brewer could have been part of a potential third move in the deal along with Thaddeus Young, but that did not happen at the time. Yahoo reports that the Brewer is expendable now that the Wolves have Bennett, as he could develop into a solid starter while Wiggins has the potential to be an elite defender and consistent scoring option.
