Seattle Mariners Rumors: Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Yoenis Cespedes Trade Targets Over Nelson Cruz Deal After Kyle Seager Signs Extension?

Nov 24, 2014 01:53 PM EST

The Seattle Mariners signed third baseman Kyle Seager to a $100 million extension this offseason, adding a third major deal for the M's as they try and build a winner and now he joins Robinson Cano and Felix Hernandez as long term players for the team and they may look at players like Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Yoenis Cespedes or Nelson Cruz as additions for 2015.

According to ESPN.com, the Mariners and Seager have agreed on a seven year deal worth $100 million and it comes after Seager had a career season with the Mariners. Last year Seager was named an All-Star for the first time, won a Gold Glove for the first time and set career highs in batting average, home runs and RBIs. Seager has been developing into a solid starter each season with the Mariners and he has continued to get better each year and now he has been rewarded with a major deal.

Seager helped the Mariners win 87 games and finish just outside the AL playoff race in the wild card. The team now has given out $100 million plus deals in three straight years, also signing Felix Hernandez and Robinson Cano. Seager gives the Mariners a cornerstone player at third base for the foreseeable future and the deal also reportedly includes an option in the eighth year.

Lookout Landing writes that the Mariners now may look at adding another bat to the lineup, as they had been interested in Victor Martinez and Hanley Ramirez, but now both of those players have signed deals elsewhere. The Dodgers have made Matt Kemp available and he is a player that could be a move the Mariners make after showing interest in him a few years ago.

The Mariners also like Justin Upton, as they basically traded for him a couple years ago and were rejected by his no trade clause. The Mariners are now off that list and after the Braves traded Jason Heyward, they may look to move Upton. Cespedes also could be an option now that the Red Sox have continued to sign players, while Cruz is on the market, but the team is weary of signing a player with PED issues in his past.
