The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the many teams dealing with quarterback drama at this point in the season. Nick Foles was playing well enough to win games. After he got injured, Mark Sanchez stepped in and is playing well enough to win games. As the Eagles remain contenders for the top spot in the NFC East, which quarterback gets the nod once both players are healthy? Is a win over the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving enough to keep Sanchez as the starter?
Sanchez's redemption tour is going well at the moment. The quarterback continues to achieve his goal of redeeming his reputation after two failed seasons with the New York Jets. The Eagles are preparing to face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving in a battle for the top spot and if Sanchez can get the win, he has the best shot at remaining the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
"That's the turnaround in this league," Sanchez said, via Philly.com. "That's how quickly things go from great to awful. This whole thing, you just have to remain levelheaded. Understand that all that we want - all the hopes and dreams and aspirations for this season - are all right out in front of us. But not to be focused on the big picture. Focus on this week."
Head coach Chip Kelly made note that the Eagles may opt to keep the hot quarterback in until a change needs to be made. Foles is looking very close to returning to full form after injuring his collarbone. Sanchez's future could come down to whether or not he is able to win against the Cowboys. The issue for the quarterback will be the turnovers, something that plagued him with the Jets. Through four games this season, Sanchez has six interceptions. He has thrown at least two picks in every game but one. That will keep him as a backup if it continues.
"There's a couple [of bad throws] that should have just been eliminated, period," Sanchez said. "Am I ever physically going to throw a bad ball again? Yeah, sure, at some point that will happen. That's the way it goes. You try to practice to eliminate those, but they happen. You have to diagnose it and move on."
Sanchez has proven that with quality offensive weapons, he can be a winning quarterback. With receivers like Jordan Matthews and Jeremy Maclin along with LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles, the pieces are in place to help Sanchez win games. Now Kelly just has to decide whether he is good enough to stay the starter for the long-term.
