Changes are on their way for the New York Jets. The loss to the Miami Dolphins has likely sealed the fate for a number of people associated with the team including Rex Ryan, John Idzik and both quarterbacks after the Jets put forth another disappointing showing. Geno Smith got the start despite not actually getting announced pre-game and failed to do anything with the opportunity. Now the Jets must consider the future of the position which might include drafting another player.
Idzik said earlier in the season that he did not believe the franchise starting quarterback was currently on the roster for the New York Jets. Idzik might not be coming back next season, but he also might not be wrong about his assumption. Michael Vick was not signed to be the long-term option and Smith is looking less and less ready for job as well.
Ryan did everything he could to help the second-year quarterback out. Smith was only asked to throw the ball 13 times against the Dolphins. He completed seven of those while one went for an interception. The Jets instead ran for 210 yards on the game and yet only managed one touchdown. According to Ryan, the game plan for the Jets was not due to the struggles of Smith or a lack of faith in the quarterback.
"It had zero to do with us not having faith in our quarterback. It had everything to do with us trying to win the game," Ryan said, via the New York Times.
The bold prediction here is that the Jets will bring on a quarterback in 2015. They can do so in several ways, depending on the amount of faith given to Smith in his ability to improve for the future. If New York were to draft tomorrow, they would have the No. 5 pick in the league. That will give them a chance to get any number of quarterbacks. Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley or Bryce Petty will all be around for the Jets to take if they feel one of the rookies can be the true franchise star.
The Jets could also target free agency and try and get a quarterback that could start while Smith develops. Mark Sanchez will laugh in their face if they try to sign him, but players like Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer or Colt McCoy will be available. It is slim the Jets try and trade from someone like Robert Griffin III or Johnny Manziel despite both players being intriguing options for New York. The bottom line is that a change in quarterback will happen, the Jets must just decide the best way to go about it.
