Olympics 2012 Tennis Results: Venus Williams Wins and Advances to the Second Round

Jul 30, 2012 10:12 AM EDT

Unlike her first performance at the beginning of the month, Venus Williams was able to move on from the first round of the tournament as she defeated Italian player, Sara Errani in two consecutive sets.

In a match that took just a little over an hour, Venus lost only four games as she defeated Errani 6-3, 6-1.

On paper, the numbers do not favor Williams since she had 14 unforced errors compared to Errani's 3. However, Williams did a great job winning on the first serve and she racked up 5 aces while not allowing any to Errani.

Williams will now advance and she will seek to capture her second Women's Singles gold medal in the Olympics. Unlike her sister Serena, Venus already has singles gold.

Williams will now face Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in the second round of Women's Singles.

Wozniak defeated Marina Erakovic to advance to the second round.

Though Williams is at the backend of her career, she is still a force in Women's Doubles. She will play later in the day with her sister as the couple will attempt to continue dominating in the event.

They will matchup against the duo from Romania as they face Sorana Cirstea and Simona Halep.
