Roger Federer advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2012 London Olympic Games on Wednesday after defeating Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin. He now finds himself closer to the gold medals in Men's Singles that has eluded him through his career. He defeated Istomin in two straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

Federer struggled through the first round. 16 unforced errors prevented the Swiss from closing out the match sooner. Istomin's four aces kept Federer on check.

The first set took 49 minutes and the second set only took 32 minutes because eventually, Federer was able to finish strong and only commit half as many unforced error.

He put the cherry on top of his victory by sweeping the final game 40-0, closing the match and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Federer is still persuing the gold medal in the Men's Singles event. In 2008 he was bounced in the quarterfinals, but he will look to turn that around this year.

Federer will take a breather and then perform in the Men's Doubles alongside fellow Swiss, 27-year-old Stanislas Wawrinka.

Their match will take place following Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's match on Court 18. The 2008 gold medalists will face Israel's Jonathan Erlic and Andy Ram. Federer will partner up with

It will be interesting to see how Federer performs as he gets ready to play his second matchup today.
