The San Diego County Credit Union Poisettia Bowl features two teams aiming to end their identical seasons on a high note. Both San Diego State and Navy sit at 7-5 on the season and would like to cap things off with a solid bowl game performance before heading into the offseason. Navy is making their 11th bowl game appearance in 12 years while the Aztecs are making a postseason appearance aiming to re-gain exposure in the college football landscape.
Navy will look to rely on their triple-option offense to beat San Diego State who has rarely seen that type of play in the Mountain West. Navy ended their season winning five of their last six games including another win over Army. They have three players currently with at least 600 yards on the ground while combining for 30 touchdowns. They average 345.1 rushing yards per game while quarterback Keenan Reynolds will get things going with his 1,182 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season. His 62 career rushing touchdowns are the most in NCAA history by any quarterback. Noah Copeland and Chris Swain are the other two leading rushers in the ground attack.
The Navy offense will meet a true challenge as San Diego State's defense is one of the best units in the country. They rank No. 15 in the country in points allowed, giving up just 20.1 per game. They have been allowing just 4.99 yards per play while defensive backs like Damontae Kazee and JJ Whittaker lead the first-team All-Mountain West team.
The Aztecs have their own rushing attack to brag about. Donnel Pumphrey will be a player to watch in the bowl game as he has 1,761 yards and 19 touchdowns on 255 carries. He is fresh off a game against San Jose where he had 261 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Punt returner Lloyd Mills could also be a threat in this matchup as he averages at least 12.1 yards per return along with 310 yards as a receiver.
