The Washington Redskins have Robert Griffin III as the starter for Week 17 for head coach Jay Gruden, but with his future up in the air, the franchise may look at an RG3 trade in the offseason and if that happens, teams like the Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders all could be options for the quarterback.
Griffin was benched earlier in the season and as the team dealt with another losing streak, numerous reports came out about his future with the team. The Washington Post had numerous articles detailing what the Redskins could do after the season and many speculated that Griffin would not be back. Some suggested that Gruden was "done" with Griffin and that Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen may side with Gruden because they don't want to ditch yet another coach. At the same time the franchise also felt reluctant about moving on from Griffin due to the fact that the team have up so much to acquire him. The injury to Colt McCoy put Griffin back in the starting lineup and now it looks like the narrative is changing again.
The Redskins won over the Eagles last week and now a report from Pro Football Talk says that Griffin will be back in 2015. Griffin has a fifth year option coming up and what the Redskins do with that likely will dictate their next moves. Griffin will be signed for over $15 million if that option is picked up and if they do, it likely means he will be the starter. Gruden has been openly critical of Griffin at times and now it may take Gruden, Snyder and Griffin sitting down in the offseason to hash things out.
Grantland and other website have put together some options if the Redskins did trade Griffin and some teams that could fit include the Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills. While Griffin likely will remain in DC, it's interesting to see what situations he could fit into around the league. The Titans will be the market for a new QB after their dreadful season, while the Raiders also could be looking for a new starter, although they have liked what Derek Carr has done this year.
The Eagles missed the playoffs and with Chip Kelly reportedly not sold on Nick Foles or Mark Sanchez for the long term, the franchise could look at making a big move to get him a more mobile quarterback. Kelly worked wonders with Marcus Mariota at Oregon and getting a player like that for him could be key for a bounce back season. The Texans have also been mentioned, as they used four different quarterbacks this season and may look for a new long term solution in the offseason.
Griffin has been up and down this season in the eight games he has played, putting up 1358 yards and four interceptions with three touchdowns. Griffin has not been the same player since his rookie season when he won rookie of the year and took his team to the playoffs, as he has had to deal with multiple knee injuries. Griffin looks electric at times, like against the Giants a couple weeks ago, but he put up over 800 rushing yards as a rookie and he now has less than that in the two seasons since.
