Olympics 2012 Women's Tennis Results: Serena Williams Wins Gold Medal in Final, Defeats Maria Sharapova

Aug 04, 2012 10:22 AM EDT

Serena Williams won her first gold medal in Women's Singles on Saturday afternoon in London in the 2012 Olympics after defeating Russian Maria Sharapova in two straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

Serena immediately started strong in the first game as she acquired three of her points via aces.

It was almost beautiful the way Serena was able to quickly get through the match and defeat Sharapova. It was all Serena in the first set. She wacked balls down the line and controlled the rhythm of the game.

Her swagger and confidence were evident as Serena sent screaming shots down the baselines and would stare, admiring her shot. Sharapova really looked helpless on the court.

She kept hitting the ball directly at Serena, which opponents cannot do because of Serena's strength. Sharapova was most successful when she had Serena on the move.

Serena had to hustle her way back from a 40-15 game deficit before wrapping up the first set.

The second set started in similar fashion. Serena took the first game, this time with just one ace mixed into her winners.

After winning the second game, Serena yelled "Come on!" almost pleading Sharapova to give her a challenge.

Two games later, Sharapova won a game and trailed 1-3 as Serena struggled in the second set.

Serena eventually took the fifth game and won the sixth game on a smasher.

Serena served with a chance to wrap up the victory. After a beautiful rally, Sharapova scrambled after the ball, but Serena placed the ball where Sharapova could not hit it. Serena followed with an ace, her ninth of the match and with gold medal point she served up another ace winning the gold medal.
