Aug 04, 2012 12:02 PM EDT

Mexico advanced to the semifinals after defeating Senegal in extra time on Saturday. They won 4-2 on a goal by Giovani Santos in the 8th minute of extra time. Senegal could not take care of the ball on their side of the court and turned it over. Santos capitalized and gave his team the lead.

They added another goal in the second overtime on a Senegal miscue. Hector Herrera poked it in after Senegal's goalkeeper, Ousmane Mane left his post.

Mexico will now face Japan in the semifinals.

The game started with Mexico on the attack with what seemed like a healthy lead in the second half. They wasted no time getting on the board as Jorge Marquez placed them ahead 1-0 just 10 minutes into the match.

It was a pretty clean game played by both sides through the first half, which Senegal controlled for the most part.

In the second half, Senegal began to attack and get physical. During minute 50, Kalidou Yero picked up a yellow card and less than one minute later Cheikhou Kouyate missed a shot on goal.

Five minutes later Senegal was at it again. Pape Soaure had his header saved by the Mexican goalie Jose Corona. Senegal continued to find holes in the Mexican defense, spending a lot of time around the goal.

Mexico took advantage of a breakaway and in the 62nd minute, Javier Aquino gave his team a 2-0 cushion.

Senegal continued playing fast and strong. Six minutes later, after the Mexicans threatened with another score, Senegal raced back the other way and opened up the field. Moussa Konate connected on a header that made the game 2-1. It was his fifth goal of the tournament.

Senegal tied the game at two on a cornerkick opportunity. Ibrahima Balde connected with the header that tied the ballgame up. It was his second assist of the game.
