The Women's Soccer Semifinals are underway in the 2012 London Olympics. The first match of the day features France and Japan beginning at 12 p.m. ET/5 p.m. GMT.
France was not expected to make it this far into the competition, according to Sports Illustrated, Japan is predicted to capture at least silver. France is nowhere in the top three finishes.
The French Women's Soccer team has a 3-1 record so far in the Olympics. Their one loss came in heartbreaking fashion as they let the U.S. score four unanswered goals after scoring two quick goals in their match.
France appeared to take out their frustrations on the North Korean's soccer team as they scored five goals in a 5-0 routing. Their last first round match came against Colombia and the French team won 1-0.
In their quarterfinal's matchup against Sweden, the French women fell behind early as they gave up a goal in the 18th minute of the matchup. Laura Georges and Renard Wendie provided two scores, giving the French women the victory, advancing into the semis.
The French team will face a Japanese team lacking offense. Remember that 5-0 match France had against North Korea? They scored more points in that match than Japan has scored in their Olympic games.
Japan defeated Canada 2-1 in their first match of the Olympics. They then had 0-0 draws against Sweden and South Africa. Japan then shut out Braziil 2-0 on Friday, qualifying for the semifinals.
