Olympics 2012 Women's Basketball Results: Australia Defeats China to Get Into the Semifinals

Australia qualified for the Women's Basketball Semifinals as they defeated China. Led by Elizabeth Cambage and her 17 points, Australia knocked out China 75-60.

The Australian and Chinese teams were locked in a tight battle in their game.

Australia took the first quarter after outscoring China 22-16. They closed out the first quarter on a 10-2 run to take the six-point lead.

Then both teams had an offensive explosion in the second quarter as China outscored Australia 20-13 to take the 36-35 lead at halftime.

They took their first lead of the second quarter after Xiaoyun Song made a three with just over a minute left in the quarter.  Xiaoli Chen followed the three with an easy bucket down low giving China a 36-33 point lead.

Australia cut the lead to one as Abby Bishop made a bucket as time was expiring in the half. That made the game 36-35 in favor of China.

Australia took its turn winning the third quarter as they outscored China 20-16. They did not waste any  time taking the lead as K Harrower made a bucket giving Australia a 37-36 lead.

China took the lead a couple of times in the game. Their highest lead was three points with 2:43 left in the quarter.  Australia finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to take back the lead at the end of the third and they took a 55-52 advantage to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter China and Australia started the third combining for three consecutive baskets. Neither team wanted to stay fall back in this close match.

Bishop completed a bucket inside the paint and Zengyu Ma of China followed with a three. Then R Jarry responded with two points of her own and the score was 59-55 in favor of Australia.

From this point, Australia went on an 16-5 run to take a 15-point lead with 1:15 left in the game. It was the biggest lead of the game.
