For now, the Washington Redskins are invested in trying to make their relationship with Robert Griffin III work. The team gave up a lot to acquire the quarterback and after three years, that has not panned out to be a complete success. Griffin has failed to capitalize off a successful rookie season as injuries took their toll while a new head coach made it difficult to progress. With Griffin staying on the roster for at least one more season, does the team make strides to add another quarterback to replace him if needed?
At the moment, the Redskins own the No. 5 draft pick. That could open the team up to a number of possibilities, but is one of them a quarterback. According to the Washington Post, the Redskins are eyeing Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, but only if one of those two players drop. Mariota is projected to be the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2015. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take him or someone like the Philadelphia Eagles will trade up to acquire him. Jameis Winston is the next-best option and there are no guarantees of where he will be taken.
The Redskins are not interested in trading up in this year's draft. They need to use all of the picks they can. The issue will be determining just how invested they are in Griffin. There are a lot of question marks around the quarterback considering his injury history and struggles picking up Jay Gruden's offense. If the Redskins feel like Griffin's time with the franchise is ending, they need to try and draft a quarterback early. However, if not and one of those two quarterbacks drop in the draft, Washington could trade down.
Teams like the New York Jets and Chicago Bears are also looking for quarterback upgrades and could easily trade up a spot or two to acquire someone like Winston or in a rare chance Mariota. That would allow Washington to try and build around Griffin instead of replacing him.
The Redskins need to add a quarterback regardless and the best move might be seeking a veteran in free agency. This year's class does not offer up a lot of excitement, but there is still quality to be had. Brian Hoyer, Mark Sanchez and Ryan Mallett are the best available while re-signing Colt McCoy should not be ruled out as an option.
