The Philadelphia Eagles continue to remain tight lipped over the future of the quarterback position, but there is no denying the team is looking over all options in front of them. When Chip Kelly took over as head coach, many wondered what he would do with the spot since he worked with highly mobile and athletic quarterbacks while at Oregon. Nick Foles does not fully fit that description, but Kelly stuck with him anyways. However, the quarterback's expiring contract does not help his status as the Eagles continue to get linked to a draft deal for Marcus Mariota.
The Eagles have not come out with one word regarding the future of Foles so everything right now is pure speculation. Philadelphia and the quarterback have yet to negotiate a potential contract extension as Foles enters the final year of his deal which means the Eagles could go in a number of directions in the upcoming season. Plain and simple, Foles is not the ideal quarterback for Kelly's system. He is not overly mobile. He struggles on the deep ball. He has mechanic issues that flare up at the wrong times. While he is 15-4 for the Eagles, no one appears sold on his long-term future with the franchise.
The Eagles continue to get linked to quarterback scenarios and not one of them deal with the return of Foles as a starter. NJ.com is reporting the Eagles are preparing a draft-day deal to acquire the No. 1 overall pick in order for Kelly to get his former star Mariota back on his side. There are reports that the Eagles like a trade for Robert Griffin III. Some mock drafts have the team taking Brett Hundley out of UCLA. Not one states that Foles get a contract extension which opens him up to trade speculation.
Foles is likely worth a third-round draft pick at best if traded. There could be multiple teams that show interest in a deal if they miss out on Mariota, Jameis Winston or Hundley. The Washington Redskins for instance are trying to remain committed to Robert Griffin III, but Foles is the pocket passer Jay Gruden likely wants. If they miss out on Winston in the draft, giving up a third-round pick for Foles is not a bad move. The New York Jets are the same way. They are just low enough on the draft board to miss out on the first two options, but still need help with Geno Smith. If the Cleveland Browns do not re-sign Brian Hoyer, they could aim to acquire Foles in order to avoid putting Johnny Manziel on the field.
There are plenty of options. Kelly is likely sitting in a lab somewhere twiddling his thumbs over the number of directions he can take the quarterback job in 2015. The obvious link is acquiring Mariota which will be easier said than done. That will likely force Foles out one way or another.
