Several teams are looking for quarterback help and only one team can land Marcus Mariota. That means trades and free agency with the position will be a storyline to watch in the offseason considering the number of teams that need improvements at the position. This year's draft pool is not as strong as years previous which means players like Brian Hoyer, Mark Sanchez and Ryan Mallett will be popular along with trades for Nick Foles and Jay Cutler.
Hoyer could be off the market sooner rather than later if the Cleveland Browns have anything to say about it. The veteran quarterback brought the Browns a good amount of success last season, but late-season struggles caused him to get benched in favor of Johnny Manziel who played even worse than Hoyer was at the moment. Now with free agency on the horizon, Hoyer says that he will consider re-signing in Cleveland, but only if he can be the starting quarterback. His agent Joe Linta told the Akron Beacon Journal that the team has said the door is wide open for Hoyer.
"I think the only thing that would make him not [want to] come back is if they said Manziel or whoever we take in the draft or whoever we sign in free agency is going to be the starter and you will only be the backup," Linta said. "I think that would probably drive him away a little bit. If [coach Mike] Pettine said, 'Hey, it's going to be an open competition again between you and Johnny,' great, let's go. ... [Hoyer] wants to play. The kid wants to have an opportunity to compete and play."
If Hoyer is off the market, a number of teams will be eyeing a trade for either Nick Foles or Jay Cutler. Both quarterbacks are considered to be on the market with other options in mind for the respective franchises. According to NJ.com, Foles is being courted by the St. Louis Rams. Chip Kelly is being linked to Marcus Mariota meaning Foles is expendable. The Rams continue to say they are committed to making their relationship with Sam Bradford, but two torn ACL's have his career in doubt. The team has a talented group of receivers and running backs meaning any quarterback that comes into the team will have the chance to be successful.
The New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals all need quarterback help in one way or another. Only one team gets Mariota and only one gets Jameis Winston. Free agency and trades will be aggressive as a result.
