The Philadelphia Eagles could be looking at big moves this offseason, as Chip Kelly may trade up for Marcus Mariota in the draft and this comes as the St. Louis Rams are reportedly interested in Nick Foles along with the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans and if he is traded, it could mean Kelly is positioning his team to move up in the 2015 draft.
The Eagles are coming into the offseason after missing the playoffs in year two under Kelly and now the team is looking to get back to the postseason in 2015. The Eagles used Foles and Mark Sanchez during the 2014 and now with Sanchez hitting the free agent market, Kelly has some directions he can go at the position. Foles may return as the starter, but Kelly reportedly was not solid on Foles before he was injured and now reports have come out that the Rams are interested in a potential trade.
According to NJ.com, there are several teams that could be interested in trading for Foles if the Eagles make him available, including the St. Louis Rams, Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans. The Rams have the number 10 pick in the draft and that could make them a solid partner for the Eagles, as they likely will need to move up twice to get Mariota. Sam Bradford was injured last season and missed the entire year and the Rams may not want to rely on him staying healthy in 2015.
Foles regressed a bit and was injured last season, throwing for 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while playing in eight games before suffering a fractured collarbone. Foles had 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions in 2013 and it looked like Kelly had his quarterback, but now that could be up in the air and Kelly may look at trading Foles in the hopes of getting someone like Mariota. Foles has a career completion percentage over 60 percent and he could end up getting traded if the Eagles go all in on getting Mariota.
The Titans could be an interesting option to watch, as they have the number two pick in the draft and also are in need of a quarterback. The Eagles could look at making a move with Foles to the Titans in a package deal to try and get Mariota and that could happen if Jameis Winston goes number one. Mariota had another great season at Oregon and he won the Heisman trophy this year and has the potential to be the first overall pick in the draft. Jameis Winston and Mariota will be picked apart over the next couple months and that could dictate how the top of the draft goes.
Foles has one year left on his rookie contract and Kelly could hang onto him and wait to pick his own quarterback the following season. Kelly added Matt Barkley in the draft last year, but he doesn't appear ready to start yet. Many have suggested that if Kelly thinks Mariota is the best fit for his offense, he should go after him no matter the cost. It likely will take a major package of picks to move up for Mariota and the Eagles currently have all of their picks for the 2015 draft.
