The Buffalo Bills have a new head coach in Rex Ryan and the team may look at making some major moves this offseason, as they could sign Darrelle Revis, trade up for Jameis Winston while also looking at Mark Sanchez or Brian Hoyer on the free agent market as options over EJ Manuel at quarterback heading into 2015.
The Bills had a winning season in 2014 and now Doug Marrone is out and Rex Ryan comes in to take things over. According to ESPN.com, Ryan was asked about Manuel and about Sanchez in his opening presser and said that Manuel needed more time to develop and that Sanchez, like other free agents, will be looked at. Ryan has a strong defense in Buffalo and a star in Sammy Watkins and now he is looking to get a QB to bring it together.
The Bills defense is not an issue, as they ranked third in passing yards allowed per game and 11th in rushing yards allowed last season. Ryan is in a similar place that he was when he was with the Jets, as the team has a strong defense, issues at quarterback and a bad offense. Last season Sanchez completed over 64 percent of his passes and had 2418 yards and 14 TDs in nine games and if he comes to the Bills, all he has to do it play solid ball and not be a superstar and the team could be in the playoffs.
Ryan had his first press conference last week as head coach and he was his usual self, saying that the Bills are a strong team and could make the playoffs. According to Pro Football Talk, Ryan was asked about Manuel and the quarterback situation, saying that Manuel has a lot of potential and that the team has some options moving forward. Ryan was asked about the potential for a Sanchez reunion and while he said that the team will consider free agents on the market and that Sanchez is one they potentially will look at.
Ryan has some solid offensive personnel with Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Fred Jackson and Scott Chandler and the team also may bring back CJ Spiller in free agency. Manuel has the potential to be a solid quarterback, but he needs more time to develop and that is why it's likely Ryan brings in a veteran. Hoyer is also hitting the free agent market and could be a target if he doesn't sign back with the Browns.
The Bills come into the offseason after finishing 4-2 in the AFC East and they could be a surprise team next season if Ryan can add a consistent quarterback. Kyle Orton led the team last season, but he retired and the offense needs to do much better, as they ranked in the bottom half of the league in passing offense and rushing offense. The defense ranked in the top three in passing yards allowed per game and the team allowed just 106 yards on the ground per contest. Ryan will be hoping to get the Bills back to the playoffs and he inherits a team that finished 9-7 and that is significant for Buffalo after years of losing.
