Ndamukong Suh is considered the best free agent set to hit the market in 2015, but he might never get there if the Detroit Lions have anything to say about it. The defensive end has stressed that his main concern is getting paid while likely becoming the highest paid defensive player in the league. Given the Lions' salary cap situation, it appears likely Detroit would not be an option, but the team is committed to trying to make it work.
According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Lions are considered the favorites to sign Suh before he has a chance to dip a big toe in the free agency pool. If available, Suh would be the premier target for almost any team in the league and the Lions are well-aware of that factor as negotiations continue to be ongoing.
Suh intends on being the highest-paid defensive athlete which means he will cost more than the $100 million deal JJ Watt inked with the Houston Texans. The Detroit Free Press makes the case that the Lions should refrain from overpaying for Suh no matter his talent level. Most teams will throw large amounts of money towards Suh in free agency, confident he will anchor their defensive line for years to come. With the Lions' salary cap situation already tight, tying up a lot of space into just a few players is dangerous.
According to ESPN, the Lions are aware of the amount of money assigned to very few players on the roster and favor trying to retain Suh over keeping Calvin Johnson. Detroit Lions' are likely pulling their hair out over that report as the wide receiver remains on of their best offensive performers each season. However, general manager Martin Mayhew believes that restructuring deals will be the best option to retain everyone and Johnson has admitted he is open to the idea.
Johnson told the media that he will do what is necessary to keep Suh for the long-term even if that means taking a pay cut. The wide receiver could be aware of the trade rumors circling his name which is why he is so willing to move money around. Others players might have to do the same as Reggie Bush, Brandon Pettigrew and Ryan Broyles all have their futures in doubt thanks to the Suh contract.
