Washington Redskins Rumors: Robert Griffin III Traded for Jameis Winston After Contract Denied? Brian Hoyer, Mark Sanchez Signed if Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy Released

For now, Robert Griffin III will remain on the Washington Redskins roster through next season. It is unlikely the team picks up a very expensive fifth-year option, but the quarterback will stay put simply because of how much the team gave up to acquire him in the draft. However, just because he is on the roster, it does not mean he will be starting for the team as Jay Gruden and company prepare to look at all angels of the position.

Like many teams, the Redskins have quarterback questions that could heavily dictate the direction the franchise goes in for the future. Outside of a successful rookie season, Griffin has fallen well below expectations placed upon him. Now, Washington can either let him play out the final year of his contract, pick up a fifth-year option that could cost upwards of $16 million or begin to find his replacement. The later seems to be the best option moving forward.

According to Bleacher Reports' mock draft, the Redskins are eyeing Jameis Winston in the first round. Without Gruden outright saying it, he has doubt that Griffin is the quarterback of the future in Washington. The Washington Post reported the team's front office was preparing to seek a trade of Griffin, something that is unlikely and will attempt to find the best replacement for the future. Winston could easily be that guy. The quarterback has the mobility of Griffin, but can also be a solid passer that works better in Gruden's offensive system.

Griffin could be the lone quarterback on the roster prior to the draft. Colt McCoy who was the only quarterback to get the Redskins a mild amount of success will be a free agent and trade rumors are once again flying around Kirk Cousins. The Redskins will either need to chase someone in free agency or draft Winston. Washington could eye a veteran quarterback in free agency like Brian Hoyer or Mark Sanchez. Ryan Mallett could also be a solid option. All three quarterbacks are known pocket passers which are what Gruden favors on offense. They would allow the Redskins to make a proper decision on Griffin while potentially grooming his replacement.
