Olympics 2012 Medal Count: Final Total on Last Day at London, U.S. Finishes in First Place

The medal counts are in as the Olympics are officially over. They ended with Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania capturing the gold medal in the Women's Modern Pentathlon. Right before this, the USA Men's Basketball team captured their second consecutive gold medal in their event. The U.S. took home the largest total again.

The United States finished with the most overall medals in the 2012 London Olympics. They captured 46 gold, 29 bronze and silver medals for a complete tally of 104 medals.

They dominated in swimming as athletes like Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin, Ryan Lochte and Allison Schmitt finished with the most medals by a single athlete. 

Phelps was the only one with six, four gold and two silver medals. Franklin had four gold and one bronze to finish with five. Schmitt had three gold, one silver and bronze. Lochte finished with two gold and silver and one bronze. 

China finished in second place with 38 gold, 27 silver and 22 bronze medals for a total of 87. 

Great Britain's medal count went up to 64 as they captured 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze for a solid performance by the hosting country.
