The Washington Redskins could be in for some major changes in 2015 and in free agency, names like Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Vernon Davis and Ahmad Brooks could be potential targets, as new general manager Scot McCloughan worked in San Francisco and he could look at those names along with Davis and Brooks if they are released for Colin Kaepernick.
The Redskins finished last in the NFC East and now McCloughan is in to try and build the team back to respectability. According to CSN Bay Area, Frank Gore could be a main target for the team, as he was drafted by McCloughan in San Francisco and the GM has spoken highly of the running back over the years. The Redskins have a need behind Alfred Morris with Roy Helu hitting the market and Gore could be a potential option.
Gore is getting past 30 now, but he has been as consistent and durable as anyone in the league during his career. Gore rushed for over 1000 yards last season and has reached that mark in all but one of the past nine seasons. McCloughan is expected to go after Gore and he could also look at other Niners players as targets. Davis is expected to be let go and he could be an option, as the Redskins had injury issues at TE last year and Niles Paul is hitting the market.
CSN Bay Area reports that Davis could be a salary cap casualty, while Brooks also could be released after having an up and down season in 2014. CSN Bay Area reports that Brooks is not likely to return, as he has a $7 million salary for next year. The Washington Redskins could be in the mix for a number of players from the Niners, as their new general manager is Scot McCloughan, who previously was in the front office for San Francisco.
The 49ers are entering a new era, as they moved on from Jim Harbaugh and promoted Jim Tomsula to head coach. According to ESPN.com, the Niners wanted "continuity" after moving on from Harbaugh and that decision stemmed from a frosty relationship between the head coach and the front office. Kaepernick signed a massive contract with the Niners and was drafted by Harbaugh and now his future could be up in the air as well.
Kaepernick had a major regression last season and while the Niners like his makeup as a franchise quarterback, his contract allows the team to consider things from year to year. Kaepernick is working in the offseason with Kurt Warner, but if he struggles, there is a chance the team could move on after 2015. Kaepernick put up strong numbers stat-wise this season, but overall his play was not as good as 2013 and the Niners missed the playoffs.
During the run with Harbaugh, the 49ers won 44 games, made the playoffs three times and also advanced to one Super Bowl, losing to the Ravens. Some of the players that helped the team get to the Super Bowl could be gone soon as well, with Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Brandon Lloyd and Michael Crabtree hitting free agency.
