NBA Rumors 2012: Review Of Orlando Magic Short Changing Their Fans In Dwight Howard Trade (Commentary)

Aug 14, 2012 10:53 AM EDT

The Orlando Magic has committed the biggest crime to their fans after trading all-star center Dwight Howard, for relatively nothing.

It took four teams, 11 other players, five draft picks and countless rounds of talks over many months to get this deal done, but how can Magic fans consider themselves winners?

Through this trade that ultimately sent Howard to L.A., Orlando got guard Arron Affalo and forward Al Harrington from Denver and forward Moe Harkless and center Nikola Vucevic from Philadelphia and forward Josh McRoberts and guard Christian Eyenga from the Lakers.

The Magic also will get a second-round draft pick from Denver next year, a first-round pick from either Denver or New York in 2014, a conditional first-round pick from Philadelphia and a conditional second-round pick from the Lakers in 2015, and a conditional first-round pick from the Lakers in 2017.

After looking at the whole trade now and knowing what Orlando will receive, it still doesn't make much sense to me.

Dwight Howard is an All-Star player and Orlando basically gave him away for a bunch of role players to add to a team, with no star now.

How can this be justified as fair to the fans when Orlando had the opportunity to receive better players in Brooke Lopez and Kris Humphries if they went through with the deal with the Brooklyn Nets, and still be able to receive first and second-round draft picks.

Reports suggest the deal never went through because Orlando felt slighted by the Nets because they felt they were in talks with Howard without their permission.

I thought always treat business as business and never allow personal feelings to hinder a logical decision.

If you're trying to stay one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference you could've thought this one through a little bit better.

But what can you expect from an organization that gave away a solid Brandon Bass in a trade for a lesser Glen Davis, we see how that turned out as Bass has proven to be a valuable player for the Boston Celtics.

As of now, I can't see the destination Orlando is going to, I'm just stuck scratching my head wondering and waiting to see their vision come to light.
