The Buffalo Bills have a new head coach in Rex Ryan and they are looking at quarterback options for 2015, as names like Josh McCown, Mark Sanchez and Brian Hoyer are on the free agent market and they are potential targets over EJ Manuel to start and this comes as CJ Spiller likely will be leaving in free agency.
The Bills are coming off of a winning season and while Doug Marrone decided to opt out of his contract, the team appears thrilled to have Ryan taking over. The team made one significant move already by signing Richie Incognito and they are looking at quarterback options on the free agent market as well. According to Pro Football Talk, the Bills met with Josh McCown and came close to agreeing on a contract and while that did not happen yet, it's something the team will likely revisit.
McCown was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing a two year deal before last season and now he could be targeted by a number of teams on the market. McCown played one season for the Buccaneers and dealt with injuries and inconsistent play and now he could end up in a starting job somewhere else. According to Adam Schefter at ESPN.com, the Bills, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets could be interested in signing McCown.
Kyle Orton retired after the season and while the Bills have EJ Manuel, the team doesn't appear ready to give him the reigns again. Manuel had the chance to start last season, but Marrone was not able to turn Manuel into a consistent starter over the last two seasons. Mark Sanchez has been mentioned numerous times, as he could reunite with his former Jets coach Rex Ryan, while Hoyer also could be a potential target.
Sanchez was a backup for the Eagles coming into the season, but he stepped up as the starter when Nick Foles went down with a shoulder injury. Sanchez played well enough to get another starting job and it would be a similar situation for Sanchez and Ryan in Buffalo that it was in New York, as they have a top defense and a struggling offense. McCown threw for 2206 yards and 11 touchdowns with 14 interceptions last season and Adam Schefter reports that he will meet with more teams before deciding on where to sign.
CJ Spiller is a free agent for the Bills and he could end up leaving, as ESPN New York reports that the Jets are interested in signing him. The Jets brought in Chan Gailey to be offensive coordinator and he previously was head coach with the Bills when Spiller had his beat season. Spiller had a career high 1244 yards rushing that season along with 43 catches for 459 yards. Last season Spiller injured his collarbone and played in nine games, rushing for just 300 yards and he is not expected to sign back with Buffalo.
The Bills went 9-7 last season and finished with a winning record for the first time in years and they are hoping that Ryan can keep things going. Sammy Watkins is an explosive player and the team needs to build on going 4-2 in the AFC East.
