The Indianapolis Colts may void the contract of Trent Richardson this offseason and release the running back after his suspension and that could lead the teams to target CJ Spiller, Torrey Smith, Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Mark Ingram or DeMarco Murray in free agency for Andrew Luck, as they need some offensive support, especially in the rushing game.
Richardson has had a disappointing stint with the Colts and his time in Indianapolis could be nearing an end after the way 2014 went. Richardson was suspended for two games and was inactive for part of the playoffs and that could end up leading to his departure from Indy this offseason. According to the Indianapolis Star, the team may now void Richardson's contract after the running back was absent from the Colts' walk-through before the AFC Championship Game.
Richardson later said the issue was for a family emergency and then reports came out that he was having weight issues for the Colts. Either way, the team may now try and get out of the fully guaranteed $3 million coming his way and could look at releasing him. The report says that Richardson may file a grievance and there could be a battle over his status. Richardson has rushed for less than 1000 yards in 29 games with the Colts and has lost his starting job multiple times.
In free agency the team may look at Frank Gore, as Bleacher Report writes that he could be a main target for head coach Chuck Pagano to step in for Richardson. Michael Crabtree and Torrey Smith could also be options as Reggie Wayne may not return. According to the Indianapolis Star, Reggie Wayne has not yet decided if he will play in 2015 and that could mean retirement for one of the Colts' most recognizable players. Wayne has not been as productive while dealing with injuries over the past two years, but losing him will be tough for Luck. Wayne had 64 catches in 15 games this season after dealing with injuries in 2013.
Maclin could be a free agent target, as he is hitting the market after having a career year with the Eagles. Maclin comes in after being injured in 2013 and he ended up with 85 catches for 1318 yards and 10 TDs this season to set or match his career bests. Luck has TY Hilton as his leading receiver, but he could use more with Donte Moncrief also emerging. The team has Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen at tight end and if they can add an RB and another receiver, they could be very dangerous again in 2015.
Richardson was the third pick in the draft behind Andrew Luck and the Colts were hoping he could help boost the rushing game after trading a first round pick for him. Richardson had a strong rookie season with 950 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns along with 51 receptions, but since then he has been a major disappointment. Richardson has not averaged more than 3.6 yards per carry in any of his three seasons in the NFL and now his future is up in the air after losing his job to Dan Herron this season.
