The Philadelphia Eagles' commitment to Nick Foles is questionable at best. It was reported that the Eagles nixed a trade for Josh Gordon involving the quarterback before the 2014 season began, but would they do the same thing twice? With Chip Kelly's favorite quarterback preparing to enter the NFL, the idea the Eagles give up on Foles and move on with the Oregon star is not out of the question,. The Tennessee Titans could be shopping their No. 2 draft pick for that specific purpose.
Addressing the media at the NFL scouting combine, head coach Lovie Smith hinted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are very comfortable drafting Jameis Winston with the top pick come April. That leaves competition high for the No. 2 pick in order to grab Mariota. The Titans stressed their confidence in Zach Mettenberger which led everyone to believe they would be shopping the pick to the highest bidder, but now Tennessee is cooling off on that idea.
"I have talked to Zach multiple times,'' Titans general manager Ruston Webster said, via the Tennessean. "For me, the thing to do is just to shoot him straight and tell him kind of where we are - not necessarily what we are thinking, because I don't know totally - but be straightforward with him about the process. I know he is going to be reading a lot of things, hearing a lot of things. I was not able to give him a commitment. I don't think we are in a position to commit to anything. He knows we like him and he knows we value him, and we'll just kind of go from there."
According to Philadelphia Eagles beat writer Jeff McLane, the team is looking to do everything they can to draft Mariota. The Eagles will likely hit up the Titans about a potential deal that could involve draft picks, Foles or even running back LeSean McCoy who the team appears less committed to by the day. Kelly wants Mariota and he will make sure he can get him. Philadelphia owns the No. 20 pick in the draft, but it will certainly cost them to jump up.
According to NFL draft expert Mike Mayock, neither Winston nor Mariota are worth selling the farm for. He uses the Washington Redskins as an example after they sacrificed so much to get Robert Griffin III. The Eagles will have to give up a lot for that draft pick and Kelly better be positive Mariota is worth it before he stakes the future of the franchise on one player.
