Manchester United have rejected an approach from Chelsea for striker Javier Hernandez, while Cesar Azpilicueta is expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge by next week.
According to ESPN, Chelsea first sounded out United about a possible deal for Hernandez, before actually making an official offer, but were immediately rebuffed by the Red Devils.
The future of Hernandez has drawn speculation ever since the capture of Robin Van Persie was announced, with the Mexico striker now falling down further the pecking order to fourth-choice, behind Rooney, Van Persie and Danny Welbeck. United also have Dimitar Berbatov, with the Bulgarian still failing to find a new club, along with youngster Federico Macheda.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are woefully short in the striking department, with only Fernando Torres the true centre forward. While the Blues line-up is loaded with impressive and talented playmakers, Roberto Di Matteo is still on the lookout for another striker to decrease the burden on Torres, who so far has failed to deliver since making his move from Liverpool, although his pre-season form has been encouraging.
Di Matteo recognizes the problem, and has backed his midfielders to share the goalscoring mantle. "We need the other players to chip in -- Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Lampard always scores goals, and Ramires at the end of last season scored some important goals -- so we need to try to diversify it," Di Matteo said.
"With the integration of our new players into the team, there will be some changes (to the playing style) because they have different abilities from players that we had last season, but the core of the team are still here and we will adapt -- but I don't think there is going to be a revolution."
On new signing Oscar, Di Matteo said: "He is a goalscoring midfielder, a creative midfielder as well. In his career so far he has played on the left side, he has played there with the national team, and he has played behind the strikers and the number 8 role as well in a three-man midfield, so he is quite versatile.
"He had a very good Olympic tournament and he is a young man as well, let's not forget that, and I think he will be a very good addition for us.
"He has broken through to the senior Brazil team at a young age and you need personality to achieve that."
According to Goal.com, Azpilicueta will join Chelsea next week, after his representatives flew to London on Friday to discuss personal terms. The Blues have reportedly agreed an £8 million ($12.5 million) fee with French club Marseille for the Spanish international right-back.
