No.1 ranked Roger Federer earned his 5th Cincy title after dominating No.2 ranked Novak Djokovic 6-0, 7-6 (7) for the Western & Southern Open championship.
Federer improved to 5-0 in the Cincinnati finals and tying Rafael Nadal for the most Masters titles won with 21. Nadal dropped out the tournament with sore knee pains that have sidelined him indefinitely.
It was the first time in the tournament's history that the top two in the world played for the title. Right from the start Federer took control and left little breathing room for Djokovic to recover from.
The Swiss star won the first set in 20 minutes, only allowing Djokovic to win just 10 points. From that point on the Serb never recovered, snapping his streak of 15 straight victories on hard court surfaces.
With this important win Roger Federer, clings even more to the first position in the world rankings, taking a significant distance and Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Every grand slam from the 2010 French Open to the 2012 French Open was won by Djokovic and Nadal. Prior to his resurgence in this year's Wimbledon, Federer had advanced to three-straight grand slam semifinals only to be eliminated. He hadn't fought his way into one Final since he won the 2010 Australian Open.
With Federer's recent dominance of Djokovic, along with the fact that Nadal is coming off an injury, there isn't any doubt who's the favorite to win the 2012 U.S. Open. Federer has won the event five times and No. 6 would be no surprise.
