The quarterback market for 2015 is starting to take shape with free agency set to begin. As veteran quarterbacks start to hit the open market, teams in need of a reliable veteran to help get them some offensive consistency. With this year's draft class not as deep at the quarterback position as before, free agents are getting a much stronger look. The New York Jets need quarterback options and as they risk getting left out of the Marcus Mariota sweepstakes, could someone like Brian Hoyer be their best option?
The Jets need a quarterback. Team officials along with new head coach Todd Bowles have confirmed that Geno Smith might not be the guy and they cannot risk not having depth around him just in case. Michael Vick is hitting the open market after his contract expires leaving the Jets in need of at least one quarterback option, maybe two. Making their first draft at No. 6, the Jets could be on the outside looking in when it comes to Mariota. The Jets continue to get linked to the former Oregon star, but several other teams are thinking of a trade up which could hurt New York's chances. That means other players need to get a look.
According to the New York Daily News, Hoyer could get a significant look from the Jets. New York was very interested in acquiring Josh McCown. Following his releasing from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McCown met with the Jets at the NFL scouting combine. While he did not go into the facilities for a workout, the team was interested. McCown was swept off the market over the weekend by the Cleveland Browns which all-but guarantees they will not be re-signing Hoyer. Of all the veteran free agents available, Hoyer is the team's best option.
The Jets will not be making trades for players like Jay Cutler or Robert Griffin III. They will aim to either trade for Mariota or acquire someone with some experience in the league. Ryan Mallett could be a solid option. The Jets could hope Kirk Cousins gets released. A reunion with Mark Sanchez is laughable, but possible. Colt McCoy could also be a solid addition.
The Jets cannot afford to wait around on this move, just like they must make a big decision on Percy Harvin. New York's offseason comes with a lot of crucial calls from the newly hired front office and the quarterback and wide receiver spot are just two of them.
