The New York Knicks continue to get hit hard with setbacks. The team just simply cannot catch a break which is making the black mark on this season grow even bigger. Relying on depth to get them through the rest of the year, that is becoming increasing difficult with injuries running wild. After saying goodbye to Amar'e Stoudemire, Pablo Prigioni and Carmelo Anthony for the year, injuries are not welcomed on the roster, but Jose Calderon appears to be the next victim.
Struggling at the point guard position to begin with, the last thing the Knicks need is to lose someone else. However, according to the New York Post, Calderon is expected to miss at least the next two weeks if not the rest of the season after re-aggravating an previous Achilles injury. Calderon was spotted still wearing a walking boot and is considered out indefinitely which will likely force the Knicks to make a move considering all they have left is Langston Galloway and Shane Larkin that have seen playing time at the position. There is not much on the market, which could end up forcing the Knicks to just look into the D-League for help if their depth gets dangerously thin.
The injury to Calderon is just another knock on his potential future in New York. Already considered gone at the end of the season, Jackson likely is not thrilled that the trade for Calderon has essentially been a failure. The Knicks gave up Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton and acquired the point guard who has dealt with injuries and a lack of productivity all season. Now the injury could hurt what the Knicks do with him come the offseason. If the point guard is still dealing with injuries, it could hurt the team's chances at trading him and might force an outright release. Calderon is not happy.
"You always hope [to be back sooner] and you're always disappointed when you're injured," said Calderon, via the New York Post. "So hopefully go sooner than that, but that's what the doctor says for right now. I want to be here, I want to be a part of this. But at the end of the day, there is nothing you can do [about it]. It's stuff you cannot control. So, yes, I want to be here after this summer for sure."
Calderon is likely aware that come the offseason the Knicks are going to push a deal for Rajon Rondo or Goran Dragic in the offseason to hopefully acquire a long-term point guard. The veteran's contract will simply not be wanted on the pay roll. Calderon might want to stick around, but Jackson likely has other plans.
