Arsenal Transfer News: Rennes Expect Arsenal Bid for Yann M'Vila; Wenger Admits He Will Buy a Defender Along With a Midfielder

Rennes expect Arsenal to step up their interest in Yann M'Vila after the Gunners sold Alex Song to Barcelona.

M'Vila has been linked with Arsenal for a couple of years now, with the defensive midfielder also grabbing the attention of Tottenham Hotspur and Zenit St Petersburg.

Wenger confirmed he would buy a midfielder to replace Song, who signed a five-year contract with Barca after completing his medical Monday. The Arsenal manager is a known admirer of M'Vila, but was put off from making a concrete bid due to his disciplinary problems.

"We are looking to bring one more midfielder in of course and maybe one defender as well because we still feel we are short in some positions," he told the club's official website.

It is being claimed, Wenger sold Song because of the Cameroon midfielder's reported disruptions in the dressing room and lazy attitude. So it will be interesting to see whether the Frenchman is willing to take a gamble on his compatriot, who recently had a run in with then France coach Laurent Blanc at Euro 2012.

Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi confirmed the club had three offers on the table, suggesting the clubs were Arsenal, Spurs and Zenit. He also revealed the player would be sold for €20 million (£15.7 million, $24.6 million).

"For the moment, there are three offers. There is no agreement. We enter negotiations this week and hope to find a solution," Dreossi told RMC. "I think that it will be done by the end of this week or the beginning of next.

"It's a complicated project with clubs who are not even internally agreed (Tottenham), and clubs that Yann does not want to go to (Zenit).

"There is even a percentage chance that Yann could stay at Rennes this year.

"Arsenal? Maybe, you'll have to call Arsene. But when Song leaves, we must say that Arsenal will reinforce that post. Same thing for a club that sells to Arsenal.

"We maintain our price tag of around €20 million."

Nuri Sahin is close to sealing his season-long loan move to Arsenal from Real Madrid, with the Turkish midfielder reportedly on his way to London to complete the formalities. If that signing is confirmed, it remains to be seen whether Wenger will go for another midfielder, albeit a different one to Sahin.

Arsenal are also looking at a defender and, expectedly, Wenger has gone to his safety blanket in France, with the Gunners being linked with a move for Toulouse left-back, Cheikh M'Bengue, who is also capable of playing in the center.

"Arsenal's interest? To be honest I didn't expect it," the 24-year-old told L'Equipe. "When such a big club is thinking about you, it is great pleasure, but you are above all surprised."

"It is really flattering. Moreover, the Premier League is the league where I would like to play.

"I didn't forecast I would be leaving, I have 2 years remaining on my contract, but it would be difficult to accept to be forced to stay.

"Indeed, I am a key part of the Toulouse squad. I have no agreement to leave or any clause on my contract.

"But you cannot refuse Arsenal, if everyone can benefit from it. I hope if there is an exciting proposition, the chairman won't block me.

"You also have to consider player's interest. Arsenal would be great."

The Gunners are also keeping an eye on Mamadou Sakho of Paris St Germain and Victor Wanyama of Celtic, with the latter capable of playing in defensive midfield as well as central defence.
