The NY Mets saw the return of Matt Harvey on Friday after having Tommy John surgery and he was perfect in two innings of Spring Training action against the Detroit Tigers, his first game since August 23 in 2013.
Harvey's return was greatly anticipated by Mets fans and the organization, as he was one of the Cy Young candidates in 2013 when he went down with his injury. Harvey had Tommy John surgery two months after his last game and was out all of the 2014 season for the Mets. According to ESPN.com, Harvey touched 99 mph while pitching at Tradition Field and he likely will get more than two innings in his next outing.
Harvey struck out the first batter of the game and he did not give up any hits in two innings of work, throwing 25 pitches. The Mets came into the game after losing to the Nationals and they next will play against the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium.
In his career, Harvey is 12-10 with a 2.39 ERA and his return has the Mets thinking about the playoffs after years of rebuilding. The team feels that they have strong young players and veteran leadership with David Wright and Michael Cuddyer and they have the chance to make a run in the National League wild card. Sorry, but the division is all Washington's this season, just look at that rotation, but the Mets will be a playoff contander this season.
