The NY Jets have lost out on Brian Hoyer in free agency and that leaves Matt Moore, Jake Locker and Christian Ponder as quarterback options on the free agent market, while the team may also consider a Nick Foles trade or Marcus Mariota in the draft over Geno Smith in 2015 and this comes as New York may try to make a run at Darrelle Revis if he leaves the Patriots.
The Jets come into the offseason with a ton of money to spend and some major needs on both sides of the ball. The team signed back David Harris and traded for Brandon Marshall and now the team is letting go of Percy Harvin, as he has a high contract number and a draft pick tied to him. The team will free up cap space by letting go of Harvin and will only be on the hook for a sixth round pick and not a fourth with him off the roster.
The Jets have a question at quarterback and now that news has filtered out that Brian Hoyer is signing with the Texans, the team may look at other free agents on the market. According to Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio writes that Matt Moore, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jake Locker are the top options for the Jets. The team may also consider trade options, as Nick Foles, Sam Bradford, Mike Glennon and Jay Cutler could be available.
According to the Daily News, the Jets could be interested in Ryan Fitzpatrick after the Texans signed Brian Hoyer and brought back Ryan Mallett. Fitzpatrick was with the Texans last season and went 6-6 with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Fitzpatrick knows the new offensive system under Chan Gailey and at 32 years old he could be an option, as he likely will be released after the signings for the Texans.
The Jets have the number six pick in the draft and they could look at drafting Marcus Mariota if he slips to their spot. The team also may look at trading up to get home, as reports have the Buccaneers almost guaranteed to take Jameis Winston number one overall. The Jets had interest in Hoyer and Josh McCown, but both players ended up elsewhere and now Todd Bowles will have to look at other options. Mike Florio floated Matt Moore as a potential pickup, while Locker is also on the market and has potential after some injury issues in Tennessee.
The Patriots and the Jets could be in for a battle for Revis, as Adam Schefter at ESPN reports that New York is planning to "aggressively" target their former cornerback if he hits the market. The Patriots want to keep Revis and they have continued to call his second year option a "placeholder" deal, meaning they are hoping to get a new one done. The team just spent on Devin McCourty and now they have the chance to keep another key player in their secondary.
Harvin is out after the trade for Brandon Marshall, as he has an expensive salary and has draft pick compensation attached to him and now the Jets may target other receivers on the market. Adding Marshall alongside Eric Decker is big and other names to watch include Michael Crabtree, Cecil Shorts and Hakeem Nicks.
