Everybody is probably already wondering who Federer will have to knock out in order to finish in the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Finals. The draw took place on Thursday at noon and all the matches were set and the rankings were designated.
Let's get this out of the way immediately, there will not be a U.S. Open Final between Federer and his recent foe Andy Murray. Both players met up at the 2012 Wimbledon Final and the 2012 London Olympics Final where they played for gold.
In the U.S. Open, Federer and Murray, if they qualify, will only be able to fight for entry in the finals as they could meet up in the semifinals.
What we do know for sure is that Federer's opponent in the first round will be Donald Young of the USA. Young is only 23 years of age and turned pro in 2004.
If Federer wins in the first round he will face Bjorn Phau of Germany or a qualifer, who is currently unknown as the competition is currently taking place. This match up should be a breeze.
If there is anybody who can harm Federer's chances of proceeding into the quarterfinals it is Tomas Berdych, Nicolas Almagro or Mardy Fish but then again, these players come into the competition ranked 6th, 11th and 23rd. Aside from their rankings, they do not look like they can challenge a player like Federer.
If Murray does not come out of his bracket, then Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5) is another favorite to give a good fight in the tournament.
The way the seeds are set up, we can expect a match between Novak Djokovic and Federer, as Djokovic is the heavy favorite, as the U.S. Open 2011 champion, to escape from his bracket alive.
So that means Federer, in order to win, will likely have to dismiss Murray or Tsonga and then face Djokovic in the final.
All of this is hypothetical, but of course, a Djokovic and Federer matchup would bring a lot of joy and delight to fans as both players have built extensive fan bases all over the world.
