Chelsea Transfer News: Cesar Azpilicueta Joins the Blues from Marseille

Aug 24, 2012 06:30 AM EDT

Cesar Azpilicueta completed his move to Chelsea from French club Marseille, the London club confirmed.

The club, in a statement on their website, said a deal had been agreed Friday morning with Azpilicueta putting pen to paper on a five-year deal. The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of £7 million ($11 million).

"Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Cesar Azpilicueta," the statement read.

"The 22-year-old right-back, who recently represented Spain at the London Olympics, arrives at Stamford Bridge following a two-year spell in France's Ligue 1 with Marseille."

Marseille, after suggesting the move had not been agreed to Thursday, also confirmed the signing on their website, posting an emotional goodbye to their defender.

"Azpi's move to Chelsea is done," a statement on Marseille's official website said. "Following Vincent Labrune and José Anigo's trip to London on Tuesday, the negotiations between OM and the English club were finalised on Friday and the Spaniard signed his contract.

"Last weekend's win over Sochaux, was his final contribution to the Olympian cause. It was a final illustration of the man and the player: quality.

"A model of kindness, good humor and team spirit, he never wavered in his desire and ambition to help OM towards the top. Now he prepares for a new challenge with the 2012 Champions League winners."

The signing of the 22-year-old rightback is yet another young addition to the squad, after Wigan said they had accepted a bid from Chelsea for 21-year-old Victor Moses Thursday. The European champions have already brought in the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin as the Blues usher forward a new era, and look to build on their Champions League success.
