The New York Knicks will be ready to make a move at the point guard position come the offseason either by trade or signing. The team will have salary cap space to spare and that position has been considered one of the greater needs of the team as they aim to build around Carmelo Anthony. After trading away a lot of their backcourt help, Jose Calderon was acquired to be that steady point guard and instead has spent more time injured than on the court. So who could the Knicks be eyeing with several teams in the market for a point guard?
At the mid-season trade deadline, the Knicks attempted to make a move for Reggie Jackson who was currently with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Instead, the Detroit Pistons won the point guard leaving New York empty handed. Jackson will still be a free agent come the 2015 offseason and many believe he is still in the picture for the Knicks moving forward, but not if Detroit gets to him first.
The Pistons originally acquired Jackson to replace Brandon Jennings who went down with a torn Achilles. According to the Detroit Free Press, it was a not a trade to fix the short-term problem as the team seeing Jackson being in the plans for the team's future. Pistons beat writer Vincent Ellis writes Detroit will waste no time getting a deal done for Jackson as a contract extension is in his future. Does that mean Jennings could be traded?
Jennings has been the subject of trade rumors ever since Detroit dumped Josh Smith. The Knicks have been linked as a team interested and could eye a deal. However, New York has other players ahead of Jennings on their priority list for free agency. According to the New York Post, Rajon Rondo is the No. 1 target, but the Lakers and Rockets have him there as well. Goran Dragic is second as he will be available after a trade to the Miami Heat. Jennings could get a look if the Knicks miss out on those players for their plans.
All of this will lead up to a trade of Calderon. Phil Jackson told the media following the trade deadline that he was disappointed a deal for Calderon was not finalized. Most NBA sources believe Jackson can get something for Calderon this offseason.
