The Green Bay Packers have been mostly quiet in free agency apart from bringing back Randall Cobb, but the team may look at some depth options on the market, as players like Greg Jennings, Wes Welker, Steven Jackson, Zach Miller and Hakeem Nicks could be potential free agent targets to join up with Aaron Rodgers in Wisconsin.
The Packers surprised many by bringing back Cobb, as the media and most in the NFL expected Cobb to take a big money deal elsewhere. Cobb left some money on the table to stay in Green Bay and now the team has all of their main offensive weapons returning. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Welker is a target for the Green Bay Packers, as the team is looking to add depth at the position and he could be a fit at his price range.
Welker is coming off of a down season with the Broncos and he could be a cheap option on the market and a solid number three or four receiver. The team already has Davante Adams and they like what he does, but Welker could be a good pickup for Mike McCarthy's offense. The team also has Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis behind Cobb and Jordy Nelson up top, but adding a veteran like Welker likely would not cost much.
Welker put up some fantastic stats with Tom Brady and he comes in after making 49 catches for 464 yards last season. Abbrederis is coming back from an ACL injury and that could mean this year could be an iffy one for him, while Janis is young and untested. Ted Thompson doesn't usually go crazy in free agency and after signing Cobb a deal for someone like Welker would be not a shock, as he will not cost much.
Welker has not had much activity on the market and Pro Football Talk reports that there has been "no buzz" about him. That would almost make it more of a Packers-like move anyway and while he is 33 years old, it's hard to discount what he did for a stretch in New England. Welker had help from Tom Brady and had over 110 catches in five of six seasons and if he comes to Green Bay, the QB level will remain the same as it was in NE and Denver with Peyton Manning.
The team may also look at Greg Jennings, as ESPN.com reports that Jennings is "open to everything" and that could mean a return to Green Bay. Jennings made some critical comments after leaving for the Vikings, but if the Packers see him as a fit, it all could be pushed aside. Jennings had 59 catches last season and over the past two years with the Vikings he has had 10 combined touchdowns.
The team also has BJ Raji on the open market and while they would like to bring him back, they are playing the waiting game to see if any other teams step up. If all options are exhausted for Raji, he could come back to the Packers on a cheap deal. The team lost Tramon Williams and could look at Patrick Robinson as an option on the free agent market. The Packers also could look at adding depth at running back behind Eddie Lacy with someone like Steven Jackson.
