The Cleveland Browns are still working out offensive issues on the team despite appearing set at the quarterback position. The team cannot seem to escape the rumors of a new quarterback coming in to join Johnny Manziel and Josh McCown as neither player has inspired much confidence in the fanbase. After a supposed trade for Sam Bradford failed, are the Browns still in the market for Marcus Mariota?
The Cleveland Plain Dealer confirmed that the Browns did offer the Philadelphia Eagles a first-round draft pick for Bradford after he was moved from the St. Louis Rams. Could that deal happen again? Yes, but it seems unlikely since Chip Kelly is doing all that he can to insure the media the Eagles will not be drafting the former Oregon star. So where does that leave the Browns who could still use one more person to add to their uncertain quarterback rotation?
According to NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah, the Browns are very much alive in the race for Mariota as he reports the team is still not thrilled with their quarterback options. There is a huge question mark over Manziel as he remains in rehab. McCown is coming off a terrible season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and may or may not rekindle that former stint he had with the Chicago Bears. There is not a long-term option on the roster, something the Browns are desperate for.
If Cleveland is getting Mariota, a trade up is required. The team has two first-round draft picks they can offer up in a deal. The team would likely have to jump to at least No. 5 for the quarterback, but there is a chance the Tennessee Titans are bluffing on their quarterback situation, so a jump to No. 2 might be the final move.
The Browns would be wise to heavily consider this. The team has lacked quarterback consistency since attempting to put their faith in Brandon Weeden. Getting Mariota would give them a quarterback to truly develop for the future while also giving them a potential starting option should McCown or Manziel struggle at the start of the year.
