Cam Newton is the current face of the franchise for the Carolina Panthers and is patiently waiting to get paid like one. The quarterback is preparing to enter the final year of his contract and is hoping to get a new deal in the coming months, but is also favoring the idea of being patient. The quarterback market is preparing to explode with mega deals likely for Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck. Newton likes the idea of staying put to see what the market has to offer him.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton and the Panthers are discussing a new contract as expected. Newton will re-sign with the Panthers, the trick is determining what he is worth. Does the quarterback who has seen a small amount of playoff time get as much as Wilson or Luck? Is he on par with Jay Cutler in terms of length or Colin Kaepernick in terms of guaranteed money?
The Observer writes that Newton is content with taking his time for a new contract in order to the let the market reset after big contract are given out. Quarterback contracts are preparing to get interesting. According to some reports, Wilson is preparing to sign a deal that is shorter with fully guaranteed money. Newton will not get that kind of deal and the quarterback is willing to hold out so Carolina does not feel pressured to give him one. General manager Dave Gettleman has made it clear that Newton will be around for a while, but the numbers will be tricky to determine.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are still looking to re-tool on offense, in desperate need of more wide receivers. According to NFL.com, the team is looking at Greg Jennings as a veteran option. The receiver paid a visit to the team after a meeting with the Miami Dolphins. He likely would be battling for the No. 2 spot on the roster with Kelvin Benjamin the top guy. The Panthers could also look to players like Hakeem Nicks and Michael Crabtree for help at the position. The Panthers are also in need of a running back, something they could look to the draft for considering the free agent market is relatively dry in that spot.
