Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the second round on Tuesday after defeating Karol Beck in three straight sets.
Tsonga was hitting both outside corners in his match against Beck. He had the Slovakian in disbelief as Tsonga consistently kept the ball out of his reach, nailing the sidelines on back-to-back occasions in the first set.
The third set was a bit interesting as Beck took a 3-1 lead. Tsonga's focus seemed to go elsewhere as his serves were off and ending up with six unforced errors early in the match.
Tsonga held serve to come back into the match, making the third set 3-2.
Beck answered right back taking a 40-0 lead. He held serve despite Tsonga making a brief comeback. He lost his cool as he could not close out the following game and after an unfroced error gave Tsonga the advantage.
He answered back and burned Tsonga with an ace after recovering the advantage, letting Tsonga know he would have to win in a tiebreaker if in fact he was going to take the match in three sets.
Tsonga came back after winning his set and broke Beck's serve tying the match at five. With two consecutive sets he took the third consecutive game and the 6-5 lead.
After Beck tied game three, Tsonga took the tiebreaker 7-2.
Tsonga did not have trouble in the other sets as he took those easily.
Tsonga will face Martin Klizan in the second round.
