The quarterfinals at the Women's FIFA U20 World Cup is set to kickoff in a few hours and the matches are set as two teams will look to survive into the semifinals of the tournament.
Nigeria and Mexico are set to face off at 4 p.m. JST/3 a.m. ET.
Nigeria is the heavy favorite in this match as they cruised through their preliminaries. They did not lose a game in the group stage as they defeated South Korea 2-0, had a 1-1 draw with Brazil and destroyed Italy 4-0 in their last match of the first round.
For Mexico, it did not start out well as they lost 1-4 to Japan. They bounced back with a victory over Switzerland, 2-0. They took the momentum from that match and beat New Zealand 4-0.
Sofia Huerta scored three goals to lead the team on offense during the first three games the Mexicans played. Nigeria's Francisca Ordega led the team with four scores in the first round.
The next match taking place right after this one will be Japan vs. Korea. That match is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. JST/6:30 a.m. ET.
Japan, who is representing Group A, along with Mexico, finished in first place in the standings with a 2-1-0 record. Their own draw came against New Zealand in a match that ended 2-2. They scored 10 goals during the tournament, while only allowing three.
Yoko Tanaka had a huge part in the Japanese offense as she almost singlehandedly scored half of the team's goals. She finished the first round with four goals.
For South Korea, representing Group B, they will send out a team that went 2-0-1 in the first round, with their sole loss coming against Nigeria. They defeated Italy and Brazil on the legs of Jeoun Eunha, who had three of the four goals in their two winning matches.
These matches form half of the quarterfinals as the other half of the teams will play the following day.
