NFL free agent Michael Sam has not signed with an NFL team this offseason, but a CFL team could be interested in the openly gay linebacker after his time with the Rams and Cowboys, as Pro Football Talk reports that the Montreal Alouettes see Sam as a potential fit for their team at linebacker.
The Alouettes currently have the rights to Sam in the CFL and according to the Montreal Gazette and GM Jim Popp said that Sam would be a good fit for the team. Pro Football Talk picked up on the story and in the article Popp was quotes as saying that the CFL would "give him the opportunity to do what he does best." Sam was drafted by the Rams and later cut and he also had a stint with the Dallas Cowboys last year.
Popp said that Sam nearly joined the CFL last year, but ultimately did not go through with it. Sam appeared at the veteran combine and at 6-foot-2, 261-pounds, he has decent size for a linebacker, but not quite what the NFL wants. Sam was the SEC defensive player of the year in college and so far his NFL career has not taken off. Sam is 25 years old and he had 11 tackles for the Rams with three sacks in four preseason games last year.
Sam later was signed by the Cowboys after being cut by the Rams, but he later was released by the team after being on the practice roster. Sam said he still has coincidence that he can make it into the NFL and he said that as long as he is healthy, he will continue playing football. Sam put up a 40-yard dash time at a hair under 5.00 at the veteran combine and most NFL scouts see him as a "tweener" meaning he is too small to be on the defensive line, but too slow to be a linebacker.
Popp said that Sam will remain on the list for Montreal and he has no plans to take him off. The team has done that before and it has worked out, including with Troy Smith and Joe Hamilton, according to the Montreal Gazette.

"His agent knows. They're ready. They know this (CFL) may be what it is. It's Michael who has to make the decision - and he might never come," Popp said, according to the MG.
