The Miami Dolphins believe a team cannot win the season in March, but they are certainly trying as they remain very active in free agency with the NFL Draft just around the corner. With mega contracts like Ndamukong Suh's already on the pay roll and one coming to Ryan Tannehill in the near future, what players can the Dolphins get that would be easy on the salary cap and also productive on the field?
According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins brought in Stevan Ridley for help in the ground game, but the running back left South Beach without a deal in place and is now preparing to visit the New York Jets. Ridley is a free agent after four seasons with the New England Patriots and could be a hit or miss for the Dolphins. The running back is coming off an ACL surgery while the last two seasons have been a struggle. He put up over 1,000 yards in 2012, but has not looked the same since.
Ridley would be cheap to acquire and Miami certainly does not need him to be a starter. The Dolphins are favoring Lamar Miller for the future of the offense, but need a nice rotational player to work him. Ridley has solid speed and playmaking abilities, but the injuries are certainly worrisome.
The Miami Herald reports that general manager Dennis Hickey is leaving the door open for Knowshon Moreno to return. After a career-high year with the Denver Broncos, Moreno headed to South Beach where he suffered a dislocated elbow that cost him a money of playing time and then a torn ACL which ended his season before it truly began. Moreno's contract demands must be low, but if he can get healthy, the Dolphins could be getting a quality rusher in return.
With the running back position taking focus, many are wondering what is happening at the wide receiver spot. With just Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills holding down the sidelines, the Dolphins have eyed players like Michael Crabtree and Greg Jennings, but have yet to make a signing. The team could make a move for someone in the draft, but that would make their rotation very young. Getting a veteran into the mix might help push younger players along and make the group more productive.
