New York Knicks Rumors 2012: Mike Bibby Not Resigned is No-Brainer (Commentary)

Aug 31, 2012 02:51 PM EDT

As rumor has it, the New York Knicks have decided to go on the 2012-2013 season without Mike Bibby.

No offense to Bibby who formed part of the great Sacramento Kings back in the early 2000's that challenged the Los Angeles Lakers in very memorable Western Conference Finals, but that is just the problem, Bibby's greatness belongs in the past.

Bibby played no significant role in last season's Knicks roller coaster of a season. When Jeremy Lin became the option, it says enough where Bibby's skills lay that Lin even received the opportunity to play for the Knicks.

The last time Bibby made a difference in an offense was in 2008-2009 when he played for the Atlanta Hawks and averaged just under 15 points a game.

Bibby is seeking a ring, this is the only reason why he is sticking around. He even joined the Miami Heat in 2011, but then again he averaged just over seven points a game in 26.5 minutes a game.

Last season, Bibby looked lost and his shot was flat. In case he has not noticed his diminishing production, he only averaged 2.6 points a game and a 40 percent career shooter only shot 28.2 percent from the field.

The Knicks do not need Bibby anymore as their roster is loaded with guards: Iman Shumpert will be back from injury, they signed Jason Kidd, Raymond Felton and J.R. Smith. These guys are more than capable of filling in the two points Bibby chipped in last season.

Despite Bibby's lack of production on the court, he would still serve as a great mentor for young teams like the Charlotte Bobcats and New Orleans Hornets. It remains to be seen, however, if these teams are interested in Bibby's services.

I will choose to remember Bibby for his earlier days in the NBA. Bibby averaged a career 14.7 points, 5.5 assists per game.
