Arsenal News: Arsene Wenger Praises Podolski and Cazorla, Expects Wilshere to Return in a Month

Arsenal got their English Premier League campaign back on track after a commendable 2-0 win over Liverpool, and manager Arsene Wenger was happy to see his new signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla get on the scoresheet.

"Everybody understood very quickly that Cazorla would not take six months to settle and Podolski is deadly when there is a chance, you see that in training," Wenger told reporters. "He showed good team work as well today, and I am pleased for them.

"Just (Olivier) Giroud needs a goal, but as long as the team wins we know that will come."

Arsenal have now kept a clean sheet in all of their three matches, with Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker, particularly, forming a good central defensive partnership. The overall defense of the Gunners was also good, with the midfielders and forwards helping out whenever necessary and Wenger hopes to continue the good run.

"As long as that record lasts, the more everybody does defensively because they want to keep the record going," he said. "Football is always a good lesson in humility because we had the No 1 and two goalkeepers out and went to Stoke and Liverpool and haven't conceded a goal.

"You never know in the game but when you have a good work rate and spirit in the team, you have a chance."

Wenger also gave some good news to Arsenal fans and indeed supporters of England, revealing Jack Wilshere was making good progress on his comeback from an injury, which has kept him sidelined for over a year. "He is looking very good in training," the Arsenal manager said. "Close? It depends what you call close.

"I would still give him a month. But it looks very good. In a month he should be starting to play again."

Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with the results, but was confident his side would improve with time. "It's about decision making," Rodgers said. "The goals we conceded, it's got nothing to do with style, nothing to do with systems, nothing to do with the tactical element of the game. We gave the ball away and then we didn't recover well enough to stop the shot.

"For the second goal, we had enough bodies behind the ball to defend the goal. And we created enough chances but were not clinical enough. There is a lot of good to come from the game but we lost and we need to improve.

"We'll get better as our season progresses. It was always going to be a difficult start.

"I have an inherent belief in this way of working, and I've had success with it. Over time here, that will be the same. These are the hard yards that you've got to put in early on and take the flak for."

Rodgers admitted he would never have let Andy Carroll go, if he did not expect a replacement to be brought in. Liverpool failed to sign any player on the transfer deadline day, with long-term target Clint Dempsey signing for Tottenham Hotspur after the Anfield club failed to match the £6 million ($9.5 million) fee.

"We all know we needed reinforcements and the players needed help, but the window is shut, we can't do anything about it now," the Liverpool manager said.

"My only concentration is with the players that are here, and they've been fantastic. They've given me absolutely everything every day and I couldn't ask for any more from them.

"We've got what we've got. A lot of young players are going to get an opportunity. Raheem Sterling, I thought, was terrific today.

"Joe Allen and Cazorla were the two best players on the field, the two little guys, the technicians.

"We've got some other young players and that's where we're at. I'm not here to cry. I can't do anything about it. The reality is we've got the group we've got.

"I am very proud to manage this club and I want to fight to keep us improving and moving forward."

Liverpool have been linked with a possible move for former hero Michael Owen; the striker is a free agent after he was released by Manchester United at the end of last season.
