Sep 04, 2012 12:29 PM EDT

Things just got serious at the 2012 U.S. Open. Bulgaria's Victoria Azarenka (1) is attemting to face 2011 defending champion Samantha Stosur (7) in the first match at Arthur Ashe Stadium and the first match of the Women's Singles quarterfinals.

However, rain is preventing the action from picking up. Currently, Azarenka holds a 3-0 game lead in the first set over the defending U.S. Open champion.

Stosur will have to come back in this one if she expects to repeat in 2012.

Both Stosur and Azarenka have played excellent tennis throughout the tournament, but this match should be a treat as they will face each other.

In her road to the quarterfinals, Azarenka defeated Alexandra Panova of Russia 6-0, 6-1, Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 6-2, 6-2.

Jie Zheng of China followed as Azarenka easily defeated her 6-0, 6-1. Anna Tatishvili of Georgia was next 6-2, 6-2.

The Australian, Stosur has bounced back from disappointing appearances at the Australian Open and most recently a second round exit from Wimbledon in 2012.

So far in the U.S. Open, she surpassed Georgia's Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1 and Edina Gallovits-Hall of Romania 6-3, 6-0. She did not look so great in the match against American Varvara Lepchenko as she struggled to get past the first set 7(7)-6(5), 6-2. She then defeated Great Britain's Laura Robson 6-4, 6-4.

Following this match, Maria Sharapova (3) will meet Mario Bartoli in the second game of the Women's Singles quarterfinals.
