The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry got off to a very heated start in 2015 after both teams failed to make things interesting in 2014. As the matchups last season were very one-sided, this year is starting out with a different story as the two team's first game of the season stretch into a 17-inning affair with Boston coming out on top. Now the two teams meet just hours later for Game 2 as New York hopes for better results.
The game Friday lasted six hours and 49 minutes as Boston took the first win of the year. It was the longest contest in both franchise's history along with the longest game played in Yankee Stadium history. Edward Mujica surrendered a two-out lead as Chase Headley sent the game into extras with a home run. From there, a power outage stopped play in the 12th.David Ortiz got a home run in the 16th along with Mark Teixeira. Mookie Betts finally got a lead in the ninth with an RBI sacrifice fly and the game ended 6-5 in the 19th. Now, 11 hours later they meet on the field once again looking for different outcomes.
Joe Kelly will get the start for the Red Sox. Most Boston fans did not expect to see him on the mound as it was assumed Kelly would start in the minors this year. But Boston brought him up and now he must carry out momentum. He posted a 4-2 record and a 4.11 ERA in 10 starts last season while loosing both games to the Yankees.
The Yankees will hand the ball to Adam Warren who earned a spot in the rotation after a solid spring debut. The pitcher is competing in just his fourth start after being a normal bullpen player. He put up 16 innings in the spring while posting a 2.70 ERA and striking out 11. He has faced Boston numerous times, but only as a relief pitcher. He gave up 12 runs in the first six outings he had against the rivalry team.
