United States Olympian Michael Phelps has returned from his suspension from sanctioned USA Swimming events and the gold medalist said that he is planning to try to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and will continue training.
Phelps was suspended for six months after dealing with some out of the pool issues, including when he was arrested for DUI, which was not the first time he has been in trouble. According to ESPN's Wayne Drehs and the BBC, Phelps said that he plans on trying to compete for the 2016 Olympics and that he will be returning to competition in the Arena Pro Swim Series coming up this week.
Last year Phelps announced that he was coming out of retirement and said that would try to target the 2016 Olympics in Rio as his final Olympic games. Phelps was suspended and did not participate in any USA events and he also agreed with the organization to not compete in the 2015 World Championships in Russia.
Phelps has set records as a swimmer for the United States and he previously retired after the London 2012 games. Rio would be his fifth Olympics. Phelps said that the suspension helped him grow and that he has become a better swimmer and person for it.
"You guys heard it here first," he told reporter, according to the BBC. "I am looking forward to next year. I don't think it's too hard to really realize why I came back."
