The Bryan brothers -Bob and Mike - added a fourth U.S. Open to their trophy cabinet, after a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win over fifth-seeded pair of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek.
With the victory, the Bryan brothers surpassed the legendary Australian team of Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, with 12 Grand Slams title to their name -the most by any doubles pair in the open era.
The 12 crowns saw them tie the record for most Major wins of all-time, sharing the record with another Aussie pair John Newcombe and Tony Roche. "It's not going to sink in for a long time," Mike said. "We idolized the Woodies growing up and they were an inspiration to us.
"But we're just having fun out there and it's been showing in our results."
The Bryans barely put a foot wrong in the final, forcing 12 break points while not giving away a single one. The win was also a measure of revenge for the American duo, after they lost to the same pair in the finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.
"We weren't thinking too much about revenge today, Bob said. "We were just thinking about playing a good match and executing the scouting report our coach gave us and winning our home slam in front of all these fans that were pumping us up the whole day.
"We're extremely pumped to leave 2012 with a Grand Slam title. I think it's eight years in a row now we've at least got away with one of them, which we're very proud of."
Mike Bryan said the duo would have been satisfied with 2012, had they not won a grand Slam, after taking home the gold medal at the London Olympics. "Still would have been a good year because we have the Olympics," he said. "But as Bob said, we wanted to keep the streak alive of eight years with a slam.
"It would obviously have been disappointing, but, you know, we're always trying to finish the year No. 1. We have a pretty good lead now. You just take a look at the positives, you know, the Olympics and trying to finish the year No. 1."
Bob added they looked up to the Williams sisters - Venus and Serena -- for inspiration. "I mean, Venus and Serena are a pretty inspirational sibling pair," he said. "They're always positive with each other.
"They love each other to death. They're always supporting each other watching the matches and the crowd. You've never seen them have a spat. You know, we're a little more violent with each other behind closed doors than those two, so we try to use them as an example," he added with a laugh.
